Chess Wizards offers summer camps for children in grades K-8. As much as we love chess and champion it’s cognitive and character benefits, we don’t believe in asking an 8 year-old to stay inside for 3 or 6 hours and just play chess during their vacation. We’ve developed an interactive day-camp format which includes all kinds of activities to keep kids both physically and mentally engaged during their time with us. Team chess games, puzzles, skill-building, and team and individual physical games are just some of the ways we integrate the whole person into our camp activities. A sample day might include exploration of a technical chess concept, fun group challenges which hone specific chess thinking patterns, a healthy snack, a mini-tournament, capture-the-flag, and blob tag. Or creating and designing your own chess piece to be used in a practice game with your new friends. After all, it’s camp… we want our students to make memories that they’ll carry with them through the upcoming school year and beyond.

Challenge Island is an award-winning STEAM enrichment program, offering hands-on workshops for ages 4-14 both in-person and virtually. NOTE: ALL MATERIALS ARE INCLUDED AND WILL BE DELIVERED TO YOUR HOME. In each workshop, students learn about and experiment with STEAM fundamentals (science, technology, engineering, arts, math), cross curricular topics (history, geography, literature, etc.), and also 21st Century Skills such as creativity, collaboration, perseverance and communication.  All this is accomplished by giving students a hands-on "challenge" that relates to the topic at hand, and students work together to brainstorm ideas and build and test their creation, and then share their learnings with each other.  Workshops can be 45 minutes longer or longer, and can take the form of afterschool programs, summer camps, in-school field trips, and much more.  To learn more about all of Challenge Island's offerings, check out their website at https://challenge-island.com/oaklandcountyeast/, or to see a list of upcoming programs and where to find them, see their registration page at https://login.challenge-island.com/events.php?location=107.

Kids learn strategies to respond to unfriendly classmates, friend comments and actions, sibling conflict and everyday challenges. Kids will need the ability to make their own slime twice during the session. Each day, different colors of slime will represent their emotions and they will learn ways to manage them.  We will even practice mindfulness with slime. Lots of fun and role-playing to handle sticky situation in this camp. We will use the movie Inside Out to go along with the colors and how are brain responds with different emotions.

Most families struggled with sibling conflict and teasing before we found ourselves in this situation of "shelter in place."   In some cases, there is sibling bullying.  Sibling teasing and bullying can sometimes cause more harm than the teasing kid or bully at school.

Parents learn strategies to use to help manage conflict and unfriendly teasing.  If our kids learn to manage their emotions at home, work though conflict, handle sticky situations, and deal with annoying behaviors they will be able to respond better to these situations in school.
